From The Chair

Kieran Scullion, Saturday, 28 February 2026

Hi everyone,

I thought I’d start my first “From the Chair” with a bit about myself and how I got into bikes.

I’ve had a passion for bikes since I was about 8 years old. My first bike was a self-built hybrid made from three or four different bikes. It even had a sidecar! It was put together in the garage, and I used to take it down to the park and whizz up and down the football pitch, taking turns with my mates sitting in – or trying not to fall out of – the sidecar!

From there I moved on to motocross bikes, a passion I still have today. I’ve got a Kawasaki KX250. I don’t get out on it as much as I’d like, but it’s always great fun. I also tried trials riding for a while, but I didn’t quite have the patience or skill for it – I much prefer going fast!

After that came road bikes. My first was a 125cc Honda race replica, followed by an XJ600, a Suzuki 650, a 1000cc Fireblade, and a GSXR 750. My current bike is a Kawasaki Z1000SX. And when I hit 40, I had a bit of a midlife crisis and bought a Harley-Davidson… but don’t tell anyone!

Bikes – and going fast – have always been a huge passion of mine, which led me to look for work within the industry. I was lucky enough to work alongside my job as a firefighter with a BSB team, R4R. It was a fantastic experience, and I was with them for three seasons.

I decided to join IAMRS after a few “close calls” on the bike and realising I could – and should – be a better, safer rider. I was also seeing far too many motorcycle accidents at work. It’s been invaluable. My riding has improved tenfold, and it’s something I encourage every rider I meet to look into. This motivated me to become a motorbike instructor teaching CBTs to new bikers and sharing my passion for the fantastic world of motorbiking it can bring as well as being as safe as possible.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve started touring more seriously. I’ve ridden all over Ireland, Wales, the Lake District, Yorkshire, Scotland and Spain – and I’m planning a Nordic trip next year.

I attend the Isle of Man TT every year and try to get over to Ireland for the road racing as often as I can.

So that’s just a little insight into my biking background and experience. If anyone has any great overseas touring routes, I’d love to have a chat about them.

Cheers,

Kieran
