November Club Night

Nick Lilley, Thursday, 20 November 2025

No one could fail to have been impressed and inspired by Scott Richardson, our speaker at November’s Club Night. A bit of backstory: coming from a keen motorcycling family who regularly holidayed in the Isle of Man and undeterred by the tragic death of his father in a motorcycle accident, Scott took part in his first IoM GP race in 1993. Some years later he moved up to professional TT racing but in his initial race, suffered a catastrophic accident at Ballaspur. Four days later he woke from an induced coma with a catalogue of serious injuries and his left leg partially amputated.

For many, such a life changing event could well have be the start of a downward spiral but not for Scott. Realising that he was lucky to be alive, he accommodated his life changing injury and after a long haul passed the necessary medical assessments to obtain a competition licence from the ACU. Just three years after his accident he returned to the IoM, racing in the vintage category. Having laid that particular ghost to rest, he spent the rest of his racing career on short circuits. However, Scott didn’t confine his time on two wheels to the track, whilst working for the Limbless Association he commuted daily to Roehampton on a 600 cc scooter.

His positive attitude to his disability has opened new doors. Scott has represented his country at badminton and golf and has competed in Speedgolf. Most unexpected was his entry into the movie industry where he most notably took the role of Quiggold in Star Wars - The Force Awakens.

When Scott isn’t working at Pace Rehabilitation, who provide prosthetics, he volunteers with Casualty Resources, enacting realistic casualty simulations for the emergency services.

It was interesting to get hands on experience of the various prosthetics Scott passed around on the night. Looking at the engineering and design functions necessary to cater for specific tasks and surprisingly, the differences in their weight.

Not just another Club Night but a life affirming experience.

We also had the opportunity to applaud fellow members who had recently passed their advanced test.
