Club Night July 2025

Nick Lilley, Friday, 11 July 2025

On such a hot evening it would have been very easy to stay in the back garden with a book and a beer, but those who made the effort to go to Dave Shakespeare’s talk were well rewarded. The focal point was "mirrorless trucks" a technology which replaces traditional rear view mirrors with cameras and in-cabin screens. In a light-hearted but highly informative presentation, most, if not all present, gained a new perspective on rider behaviour as we were taken through the various stages of manoeuvring around a truck. Luddites excluded, we believe that new technology brings some advantages. In the case of “mirrorless trucks” it appears that currently, the only real benefit is the one percent fuel cost saving due to reduced drag. I skip the details for fear of getting the facts wrong but we enjoyed an entertaining evening where there was a lot of audience participation and a good deal of laughter before we were allowed outside to clamber into the cab of the tractor unit Dave used as his substantial prop.

An equally enjoyable moment was the presentation of test pass certificates.
